There’s No Place Like ………
A collaboration with fiber artist Rebekah Sims
This much is true: according to the UNHRC there were 43.4 refugees globally by the end of 2023. What is also true is that these many, many millions do not flee because they want to. They love their countries. War, famine, gang violence, extreme poverty, religious, racial, gender, and political persecution, and extreme climate events continue to force families to abandon where and what they love. This artist book of footsteps, originally focused on the horrors, shifted to one illuminating what refugees heartbreakingly leave behind. Our original text for this piece was scrapped once we discovered the beautiful poem ‘We Are Refugees’ penned in 2023 by the late Benjamin Zephaniah.
