Vanishing Rainforest

Rainforests, once 14% of the earth’s land surface, now they cover only 6% of our planet. They are critical to our defense against climate change. They provide 20% of our drinking and fresh water, 20% of our oxygen supply. 50% of all plants and animals on earth live in the rainforest. 25% of our modern medicines are derived from rainforest flora; 70% of those medicines, used to treat cancer, are made from plants found only in the rainforests. 90% of the world’s population living in extreme poverty depend on rainforests.

Since the 1960s we have lost half the world’s rainforests; deforestation devastates 36 football fields’ worth of trees every minute. Experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years.
